Alice Merton was born in Frankfurt (Germany) in 1993 and is a singer, songwriter, and pianist. She began her musical journey at the age of 5 by taking classical piano lessons and at 9, she started vocal training. She took up songwriting in high school and went on to study at the Mannheim conservatory of music. Her musical style is best described as progressive pop (a sub-genre of pop music that attempts to break with pop's standard formula by using changes in key and rhythm, experiments with larger forms, and unexpected, disruptive, or ironic treatments of past conventions) and alternative rock (a style of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s). Her breakthrough came with her 2016 debut single (No Roots) topping Billboard's Alternative Songs chart and going Platinum in Germany, Austria, France, and Italy. It also a top 4 hit France, Germany, Austria, Israel and Slovenia. She went on to have a stellar career with 3 more singles, 1 extended play, and she's been the opening act for opening act for German pop/rock artists Bosse and Philipp Poisel. Her debut studio album (Mint) comes out in January 2019.
