American Football, Illinois' sensational emo artists are bringing their signature sounds to the Paradise Rock Club!
American Football was formed in Urbana (Illinois) in 1997 by vocalist/bassist/guitarist Mike Kinsella, guitarist Steve Holmes, and drummer/trumpet player Steve Lamos. They were students at the University of Illinois and decided to band together after Mike and Steve left their previous band (One Up Downstairs).Their musical style is best described as a blend of emo (a loosely categorized rock music genre characterized by expressive and often confessional lyrics), indie rock (a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s, encapsulating the genres chamber pop, indie pop, lo fi, math rock, neo psychedelia, post punk revival, sadcore, and shoegaze), math rock (a sub-genre of indie rock characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures, counterpoint, odd time signatures, angular melodies, and extended, often dissonant, chords), and post rock (a form of experimental rock characterized by the influence and use of instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms not traditionally found in it). They've had a stellar career with 1 extended play, 3 studio albums, and they've collaborated with m Paramore's Hayley Williams, Land of Talk's Elizabeth Powell, and Rachel Goswell of Slowdive.
