Capital Cities was formed in Los Angeles in 2010 and is a duo consisting of Ryan Merchant (vocals, keyboard, guitar) and Sebu Simonian (vocals, keyboard). Ryan met Sebu after posting an ad on Craig’s List for a music producer. They started writing jingles together and spent 3 years composing music for commercials and advertising campagins. In 2010, they decided to focus on a music career and it wasn’t long before they got a record deal. They released their eponymous debut extended play in 2011 and one of its tracks (Safe and Sound) quickly became a top 10 hit in the US, Canada, Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. It went on to be certified Gold in Switzerland, Platinum in Italy, Germany, Australia, and double Platinum in the US. The duo added Manny Quintero (bass guitar), Spencer Ludwig (trumpet), Nick Merwin (guitar), and Channing Holmes (drums) to complete the line up and they’ve had a stellar career with 1 studio album, 2 extended plays, and 6 singles. They’ve received many accolades including an MTV Video Music Award for Best Visual Effects, a Grammy Award nomination for Best Music Video, and 3 Billboard Music Award nominations.
