Devin Garret Townsend was born in New Westminster (British Columbia, Canada) in 1972 and is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (guitars, bass, and keyboards), songwriter, and record producer. Over the years, his musical style's spanned many genres such as heavy metal, alternative metal (a genre that infuses heavy metal with influences from alternative rock and other genres not normally associated with metal), industrial metal (a genre that draws from industrial dance music, thrash metal and hardcore punk, using repeating metal guitar riffs, sampling, synthesizer or sequencer lines, and distorted vocals), and progressive metal (a fusion of heavy metal and progressive rock that combines the loud aggression and amplified guitar driven sound of the former with the more experimental, cerebral or pseudo classical compositions of the latter). His trademark production style, featuring a heavily multi-tracked wall of sound, has been compared to those of Robert Fripp and Frank Zappa. He made a name for himself as the founder, songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist of extreme metal band Strapping Young Lad and then went on to have an illustrious solo career with 17 studio albums, 1 live album, 3 compilation albums, 4 extended plays, 8 singles, 12 music videos, 2 video albums, and 2 box sets.
