Digable Planets was formed in 1989 in and is a trio consisting of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira, and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving. Ishmael met Craig in Philadelphia during his trips there from New York (where he was interning at a record label). Craig was a member of a rap outfit called Dread Poets Society. Ishmael began recording demo tapes and eventually began collaborating with Craig (who used to date Mary Ann and roped her in as well). They honed their craft for a few years, got a record deal with Pendulum Records in 1992, and moved to Brooklyn. They released their debut album, Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space), in 1993 and its lead single, Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat) became a huge hit. It peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles. It was certified Gold and won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The trio went on to have a stellar career with 2 more studio albums, 5 more singles, and each of them have also had successful solo careers.
