DJ Shadow, California’s sensational instrumental hip-hop artist is bringing his signature sounds to Paradise Rock Club!
DJ Shadow (birth name Joshua Paul “Josh” Davis) was born in San Jose in 1972 and is record producer and DJ. He began his music career as a disc jockey for KDVS; a campus radio station for the University of California, Davis. He worked on developing an experimental hip-hop style and his early singles blended elements of funk, rock, hip hop, ambient, jazz, soul, and even music from second-hand records. He cites Kurtis Mantronik, Steinski, and Prince Paul as his main influences and his sound is largely sample-based. He claims “lyrics…are confining, too specific” and his tracks usually feature only short vocal clips. He released his debut studio album (titled Endtroducing…) in 1996 and it received widespread critical acclaim. It went on to appear in the 2001 Guinness World Records book for ‘First Completely Sampled Album’. The only equipment he used to produce it were the AKAI MPC60 12-bit sampling drum machine, a pair of turntables, and Pro Tools digital audio workstation. The album was included on Time magazine’s 2006 list of 100 all-time best albums. He’s had a stellar career with 4 more studio albums, 6 live albums, 6 compilation albums, 2 remix albums, 3 EPs, and 28 singles.
