Ensiferum was formed in Helsinki, Finland in 1995 by Markus Toivonen (guitar), Sauli Savolainen (bass), and Kimmo Miettinen (drums). They recruited vocalist/guitarist Jari Mäenpää to complete the line up and named themselves after the Latin word for 'sword bearer'. The band's been through many line up changes over the years and it currently consists of Markus (clean vocals, guitars, and backing vocals), Petri Lindroos (harsh vocals and guitars), Sami Hinkka (bass and clean vocals), and Janne Parviainen (drums). Their musical style is best described as a blend of folk metal (a fusion genre of heavy metal music and traditional folk music that developed in Europe during the 1990s and is characterised by the widespread use of folk instruments and, to a lesser extent, traditional singing styles), melodic death metal (a sub genre of death metal that employs highly melodic guitar riffs, often borrowing from traditional heavy metal), and Scandinavian metal (a style of heavy metal music - also known as Viking metal - with origins in black metal and Nordic folk music). They’ve had a stellar career with 7 studio albums, 2 live albums, 2 compilation albums, 2 extended plays, 7 singles, 6 music videos, and 3 demo tapes.
