Lizzo, Michigan’s sensational alternative hip hop and indie pop artist is bringing her signature sounds to the Paradise Rock Club!
Lizzo (birth name Melissa Jefferson) was born in 1988 in Detroit and took an interest in music when she moved to Houston. She said in an interview, “Houston had a huge influence on my music and my sound. It was the city that turned me into a rapper because rap and screwed-up music was happening. It was just an amazing time to be young, ready and hungry.” In 2011, she moved to Minneapolis and started to perform with local indie groups and became the lead singer of electro soul pop duo, Lizzo and the Larva Ink. Regarding the effect the city had on her music, Lizzo says, “Minneapolis will embrace you and all of your weirdness. It will take who you think you are, break it up and make you find a new you—the new creativity in you. I didn’t know how to marry the rap side, the gospel side and the weird indie side, and Minneapolis taught me how to do that.” She released her debut solo studio album (Lizzobangers) it received widespread acclaim. Her follow up album (Big Grrrl Small World) came out in 2015 and her latest release is an extended play titled Coconut Oil EP.
