Petit Biscuit is the stage name of DJ, multi instrumentalist (cello, piano, and guitar) and music producer Mehdi Benjelloun. Born in Rouen (France) in 1999, he began his musical journey at the age of 12 by making music on a synthesizer. He was inspired by genres such as electro house (a form of house music characterized by a prominent bassline and/or kick drum and a tempo between 125 and 135 beats per minute) and classical and he cites Bonobo, Shlohmo, and Flume as his main influences. His musical style is best described as tropical house; a subgenre of deep house (which is a subgenre of house music that originated in the 1980s, initially fusing elements of Chicago house with 1980s jazz funk and touches of soul music) with elements of dancehall and Balearic house, and usually featuring tropical instruments such as steel drums, marimba, guitar, saxophone or even pan flute. His breakthrough came in 2015 with one of his singles (Sunset Lover) getting massive radio play and hitting #6 in France. It also peaked at #13 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Songs chart and it now has more than 180 million streams between Spotify and SoundCloud. He released his eponymous debut extended play in 2016.
