The band was formed in St. Louis in 1994 by Jay Farrar, Jim Boquist, Dave Boquist, and Mike Heidorn. Jay and Mike were members of alternative country band Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt performed its debut show in Minneapolis in 1995. Their musical style can be best described as a blend of alternative rock, alternative country (a subgenre of country music that incorporates influences ranging from roots rock, bluegrass, rockabilly, honky-tonk, alternative rock, folk rock, and punk rock), and blues (a genre – developed by by African Americans in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century – incorporating spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads). The band’s been through many line up changes over the years and it currently consists of Jay (guitar, harmonica, piano, and vocals), Jacob Edwards (drums), Chris Frame (guitar), Mark Spencer (keyboards, steel guitar, and bass), and touring bassist Andrew Duplantis. Their debut studio album (Trace), though not a large commercial success, was met with widespread acclaim. Their popularity grew even further with their next 2 albums (1997's Straightaways and 1998's Wide Swing Tremolo) and they went on to have a a stellar career with 9 studio albums.
