The band was formed in Los Angeles in 2011 by Syd Bennet and Matt Martians (both of whom are members of the hip hop collective Odd Future) along with Patrick Paige, Christopher Smith, and Tay Walker. The band’s been through a few line up changes over the years and it currently consists of Syd (vocals), Matt (keyboards, vocals), Patrick (bass guitar), Chris (drums), and Steve Lacy (guitar). Their musical style can be best described as a blend of alternative R&B;, neo soul (a style of music that emerged from soul and contemporary R&B; but is distinguished by a less conventional sound and the presence of many other genres ranging from jazz, funk, and hip hop to pop, fusion, and African music), hip hop, trip hop (a subgenre of electronic music that originated in the early 1990s in the United Kingdom, as an experimental variant of breakbeat), and electronica. They’ve had a stellar career with 3 studio albums, 3 extended plays, 2 compilation albums, and 2 singles. They’ve also done production work for Lana Del Ray, Charli XCX, Kilo Kish, and Alt-J. They’ve been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
