The band was formed in Austin in 2003 by guitarists John D. "J.D." Cronise and Kyle Shutt along with drummer Trivett Wingo. Their musical style is best described as a blend of hard rock (a loosely defined subgenre of rock music featuring heavy use of aggressive vocals, distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and often accompanied with pianos and keyboards), heavy metal (a subgenre of rock that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s and features a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness), doom metal (an extreme style of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low tuned guitars and a much thicker or heavier sound than other metal genres), and stoner metal (genre which combines elements of heavy metal, psychedelic rock, blues rock, alternative metal, space rock, and doom metal). The band currently consists of J.D (vocals and guitar), Kyle (guitars), Bryan Richie (bass and synthesizers), and Santiago "Jimmy" Vela III (drums and percussion). They’ve had a stellar career with 5 studio albums, 1 live album, 1 compilation album, 10 music videos, 2 extended plays, 1 box set, and 11 singles.
