Young M.A (birth name Katorah Kasanova Marrero) was born in Brooklyn in 1992 and is of Jamaican and Puerto Rican descent. She began rapping when she was just 9 years old and honed her craft for many years. She cites 50 Cent as her biggest influence and the controversy surrounding her 2014 track (Brooklyn Chiraq) started to get her noticed. Boyce Watkins (American author, economist, political analyst, and social commentator) criticized the song for promoting “violent, negative, genocidal energy.” Her popularity grew even furter with the release of her 2015 single (Body Bag) and mixtape (Sleep Walkin'). Her breakthrough came in 2016 with her single (Ooouuu) hitting #19 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track’s been remixed by many renowned rappers such as French Montana, Remy Ma, Jadakiss, Uncle Murda, A$AP Ferg, Tink, and it wasn’t long before she started to get record deal offers. However, she decided to remain an independent artist and went on to have a stellar career with 4 mix tapes, 3 singles, and collaborations with Don Mega, Smif-n-Wessun, Buckshot, C.A.S.H Montana Young Neez, Uncle Murda, Project Pat, Coca Vango, Big Tril, Dae Dae, and Young Thug.
