Aly and AJ was formed in Torrance (California) in 2004 and is a duo consisting of sisters Alyson and Amanda Michalka. While their musical style can be broadly classified as pop, it’s best described as a blend of indie pop (a sub genre of alternative/indie rock originating in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s and differing from indie rock to the extent that it’s more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst free), synth pop (a sub genre of new wave music that rose to prominence in the late 1970s and features the synthesizer as the dominant musical instrument), and pop rock (a genre that originated in the 1950s, influenced by the beat, arrangements, and style of rock and roll but with a greater emphasis on professional songwriting and recording craft). They’ve had a stellar career with 3 studio albums (one of which as been certified Gold in the US), 7 singles (one of which hit #17 on the US Billboard 200 chart), 10 music videos, and 1 video album. They’ve received many accolades including 4 Radio Disney Music Awards, a Popdust Award (for Best Siblings in Pop), a MovieGuide Award, a Napa Film Festival Special Jury Award, and a Behind the Voice Actors Award.
