Pixies, Massachusetts’ sensational alternative rock artists are bringing their signature sounds to the Paradise Rock Club!
The band was formed in Boston in 1986 by guitarist Joey Santiago and songwriter Black Francis. They recruited bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering to complete the line up and decided to call themselves Pixies after Joey randomly chose the word from a dictionary. While their musical style can be broadly classified as alternative rock, it’s best described as a blend of psychedelic rock (a style of rock music - inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture - that attempts to replicate and enhance the mind altering experiences of psychedelic drugs, most notably LSD, by using novelty recording techniques, electronic instruments or effects), noise pop (a subgenre of alternative rock - developed in the mid 1980s in the UK and US - that mixes dissonant noise or feedback, or both, with the melodic instrumentation and production elements more often found in pop music, making it more melodic than noise rock), hard rock, and surf rock (a subgenre of rock music associated with surf culture, particularly as found in Southern California). They’ve had a stellar career with 6 studio albums, 6 compilation albums, 4 video albums, 9 music videos, 3 extended plays, 12 singles, and they’ve been a significant influence on renowned bands such as Nirvana, Radiohead, the Strokes, Blur, Weezer, and many more.
